Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: in the past few weeks there have been many rumors surrounding what Nintendo has planned for 2021 and this is simply another one to add to the pile. Apparently, Nintendo is gearing up for a new Nintendo Direct to be announced in the coming weeks. It’s been over a year since we’ve gotten a “proper” full length Direct from the company, so it feels like we’re long overdue. Additionally, their online archive has been updated several times over the past week suggesting that something is coming.
Discovered by Reddit user u/porkydickson, the website for the Nintendo Direct archive was updated on January 8. They used VisioSpark, a website that allows you to check when other sites have been last modified, to find this information. When looking at it myself, the archive site had been modified again today, January 11. You can try the links above to look yourself if you’re skeptical.
The reason this information makes us think that a new Direct is coming is because they might have modified the site to account for a scheduled link to go up once the new Direct airs. That said, websites require constant maintenance and updates so this is obviously not set in stone.
Nintendo has been quiet on their first-party releases and announcements for the past few months and we seem to know very little about what’s on the horizon for the company.
Earlier this month, a rumor surrounding what titles would be announced in an upcoming Nintendo Direct made its rounds on Twitter. The list included sequels to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2as well as Switch ports to games like Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War and Final Fantasy VII Remake. The list seemed far too good to be true and said a new Nintendo Direct would be coming today, January 11, which obviously has not happened. As of right now, it seems like that rumor has been confirmed as fake.
