Prime Video’s planned television adaptation of the Fallout video game franchise is officially moving forward.
Back in July of 2020, it was reported that Amazon Studios had partnered with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks to develop a Fallout TV series for Prime Video, enlisting Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Kilter Films for the project. Deadline now reports that Nolan is set to direct the show’s premiere episode, which is slated to enter production sometime this year.
In addition to Nolan being confirmed to direct the premiere, Prime Video’s Fallout has found its showrunners in Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley). Nolan, Joy and Athena Wickham are executive producing the show for Kilter Films, with Todd Howard executive producing Bethesda Game Studios and James Altman executive producing Bethesda Softworks.
“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said back in July 2020. “Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”
Fallout is a post-apocalyptic, retro-futuristic series of role-playing games rife set in a reality where the world was devastated by nuclear war in the year 2077. The games follow various protagonists across the following couple centuries, showing the remains of what once was the United States and chronicling its denizens’ attempts to rebuild society.
The franchise’s first mainline entry, Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game, was developed and published by Interplay Productions in 1997. The RPG division of Interplay was soon renamed Black Isle Studios. Developed by Black Isle and published by Interplay, Fallout 2 was released in 1998. Black Isle shut down due to financial woes in 2003, with Interplay selling the rights to Fallout to Bethesda in 2007.
Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, published by Bethesda Softworks and directed by the aforementioned Todd Howard, Fallout 3 was released in 2008. Bethesda Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks and Howard followed the game up with Fallout 4, which released in 2015. In the interim, Bethesda Softworks published Fallout: New Vegas, a spinoff title developed by Obsidian Entertainment (a studio formed out of the ashes of Black Isle) in 2010.
New Vegas is far from the only spinoff, however. 2001 saw the release of the turn-based real-time tactical role-playing game Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, developed by Micro Forté and published by 14 Degrees East. Prior to selling the franchise to Bethesda, Interplay developed and published Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel in 2004, though the game is considered non-canon to the series. Bethesda itself released the free-to-play mobile title Fallout Shelter in 2015. Most recently, Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks released 2018’s Fallout 76, an online game that serves as a prequel to every other entry.
