The world of third-party controllers is a wide and varied one, but there are a few companies that have remained a bit more active in the public eye than others. One such company is that of 8BitDo which has created a large selection of different controllers that support the Nintendo Switch. The company’s support is continuing with its latest product, the 8BitDo “Pro 2”.
While the name might suggest that this controller takes cues from Nintendo’s own Pro Controller design, this is actually a whole lot more similar to that of the DualShock layout with bottom thumbsticks that are level with each other. The ABXY buttons are matched with Nintendo, however and it sports a cross-shaped D-pad.
What helps the Pro 2 to really stand out are the dual paddle buttons that sit on the handgrips, along with three custom profile switch buttons. You can program the additional buttons as you see fit. The controller also sports two analog triggers, though they seem to be shallower than something like an Xbox or DualShock controller. Macros are also supported by this controller as well as vibration motors located in the handgrips (but this is not HD Rumble).
A lot for a little
Since this is a wireless controller, you’ll be happy to know that it can last for about 20 hours on a single charge, and will take four hours to go from 0-100%. The best part about its battery situation is that it can be charged via USB-C.
If the Pro 2 sounds like it’s something that might be up your alley, then you’ll be happy to know that 8BitDo really isn’t charging much at all for it. The new controller is going to cost a mere $49.99 (USD). This is far more affordable than an official Switch Pro Controller, or even a new pair of Joy-Con. And keep in mind that this controller can be easily paired with other devices, as it has support for Windows, Android and iOS.
Speaking of mobile devices, there’s even a phone grip accessory from 8BitDo that will allow you to easily hook your phone onto your controller. Not as snazzy as a full Switch or Switch Lite. , but something to enjoy perhaps some games on xCloud or GeForce Now. Using on these other platforms will also allow you to make use of the 8BitDo Ultimate Software, thus enabling you to customize the button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control, use the aforementioned macro functionality and create different controller profiles.
The 8BitDo Pro 2 is set to launch on April 12 and pre-orders are already live via Amazon.
